Area around Innsbruck

Innsbruck is the capital city of the federal state of Tyrol (Tirol) in western Austria. It is located in the Inn Valley at the junction with the Wipptal (Sill River), which provides access to theBrenner Pass, some 30 km (18.6 mi) to the south.

Innsbruck lies about half way between Munich (Germany) and Verona (Italy). Located in the broad valley between high mountains, the so-called North Chain in the Karwendel Alps (Hafelekarspitze, 2,334 metres or 7,657 feet) to the north, and the Patscherkofel (2,246 m or 7,369 ft) and Serles (2,718 m or 8,917 ft) to the south.

Innsbruck is an internationally renowned winter sports centre, and hosted the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympics as well as the 1984 and 1988 Winter Paralympics. Innsbruck also hosted the first Winter Youth Olympics in 2012. The word bruckcomes from the same root as the modern German word "Brücke" meaning "bridge" which leads to "the bridge over the Inn".[2]

The population of Innsbruck is approximately 130,000 citizens. Located in the heart of the alps, Innsbruck is the capital of Tyrol. Not only is our city famous for the beautiful mountains, but well known for downhill skiing, ski jumping, and speed skating. Outdoor activities in the mountains are one of Innsbruck’s main attractions. The city transportation offers cable car trips directly from the city center to the top of mountains, which are more than 2,000 meters above sea-level.

The city itself is located 578 meters above sea-level. Innsbruck has had the privilege of hosting to Olympic Games - 1964 and 1976. Ice dance became an Olympic event here in Innsbruck at the 1976 Games. The city is was also in charge of the 2012 Youth Olympic Games and the International Children’s Games in 2016. The European Figure Skating Championships took place in Innsbruck as well, so the sport of figure skating is definitely not foreign to our wonderful city.

Sightseeing

The ‘Old Town’ is definitely one of Innsbruck’s main attraction in the city center. The top of mountains Seegrube and Hafelekar would also be worth paying a visit to. Another wonderful place to see would be the ‘Swarovski Kristallwelten’ near Innsbruck. It is a beautiful opportunity to visit the roots of the worldwide known company of Swarovski.
